Rick’s Rant Ep 6: Something for the builders out there

Rick's Rants Episode #6: Something for the builders

With all this focus on making desktop linux something for the mass market, is there a chance that we end up removing the great things that drew us to the platform as users/developers? Is it possible to have a product that wins with the mass market as well as the people that there building and developing things? Listen/watch the rant and let me know what you think. Do we need something different for Ubuntu users? What would an "Ubuntu Developer Edition" look like in your mind?

Rick's Rants Episode #4: Curse of the part time developer

You know the guy, the one that's never able to head over to the local LUG meeting. Never shows interest in that cool new example of that awesome bit of code you saw at the last meetup. You've found the "Part time developer" in the group. It's time to call them out. Rant on!

Rick’s Rants Episode 3: We’re Here Because it Rocks

Rick's Rants Episode #3: We're Here Because it Rocks

A recent post from Roberto about "Why we are here" got me thinking...do people use OSS because it's free, or do they really just use the best tool for the job. How many people feel the need to preach/convert other users out there? I've paid for commercial software I thought was better, even software for Linux. I don't take the freedom angle too deeply, but I do appreciate any software tool that can make my life easier/better, and hey, if it's open/free then all the better. I'm using the stuff I do because I firmly believe it's the best stuff out there.

Let us know, why are you here? Did you come for the free and stick around for the freedom? Or is it just giving what you're handed, what you can get for no cost?

Rick’s Rants Episode 2: Newbie Stole My Linux

Rick's Rants Episode #2: Newbie Stole My Linux

Is it just me or has the progress made in making Linux easier for the non-techies/Linux users actually made it harder to make Linux do what it was best at, molding into the great tool that fits you better than the other OSes out there? I rant on my issues getting Ubuntu to do what I want on my new Laptop and ponder if Ubuntu's outgrown me or I've outgrown it.

Rick’s Rants Episode 1: Help Me! Netiquitte

Rant Ep 1This is our first episode of Rick's Rants. Basically I have a reputation as willing to take on things that annoy me to no end. I tried to start these off in a short, < 10min, test episode with something that's not pure rant. So consider this another beta release. Provide feedback at feedback@lococast.net or in the comments below. Make sure to let me know if you've heard me rant at MUG or CoffeeHouseCoders and think it'd make a good one for the shotcast.

In the future I might try to bring in some guests to cover the other point or to help me cover the rant material. Let me know if you might be interested in doing a test co-host rant.

And with that I give you
